“Premium” is printed on almost every jewellery listing in India. But when a pair of earrings costs ₹500 in one store and ₹2,500 in another, what is actually different? Here is what to look for – the same checklist we use when we design at Sorele.
1. The base metal
Most of what decides quality is invisible: the metal underneath the gold. Brass and mixed alloys are cheap but react with sweat and air – they darken, lose plating and can turn skin green. Stainless steel and 925 sterling silver are stable bases that hold plating well. Most Sorele gold-tone pieces are 18K gold plated over stainless steel; our silver range is 925 sterling silver.
2. The plating
Look for the karat of the gold used (18K gives a rich, warm tone) and ask how thick the layer is. Thicker plating on a stable base lasts much longer. Read more in our guide to 18K gold plated jewellery.
3. Skin safety
If you have sensitive skin, avoid unknown alloys. Stainless steel and sterling silver are well tolerated by most people because they do not corrode against the skin.
4. Waterproof and anti-tarnish
Everyday jewellery should survive real days – handwashing, rain, a gym session, a beach trip. Our gold and platinum plated pieces are waterproof and anti-tarnish, so you do not have to take them off every time water is involved.
5. Finishing and design
Run a finger along the edges: premium pieces feel smooth, clasps close firmly, stones sit level and earring posts are straight. Good design also means wearability – lightweight earrings, chains that do not tangle, rings that do not catch.
Fashion, demi-fine or fine?
Most everyday buyers are happiest in demi-fine jewellery – real, durable materials at accessible prices. Read our explainer on what demi fine jewellery is. For milestone pieces, lab grown diamonds in 9K gold offer true fine jewellery at a gentler price.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if jewellery is good quality?
Check the base metal, the plating, whether it is waterproof and anti-tarnish, and the finishing of clasps, posts and edges.
Is stainless steel jewellery good?
Yes – stainless steel is strong, does not rust and holds gold plating well, which makes it a great base for everyday jewellery.
